Fed: Any overclaimed Family Tax Benefit must be repaid: Minister
Community Services Minister LARRY ANTHONY says single parents who overclaimed a Family
Tax Benefit are incurring a debt which needs to be repaid eventually.
A report claims that some single parents face a bill of thousands of dollars at tax
time because Centrelink has no way of knowing whether they are overclaiming FTB now.
The FTB is a flexible benefit, paid to each parent according to how much time they
spent caring for their children.
Mr ANTHONY says a single parent could be claiming 100 per cent when they're only entitled
to 10 per cent.
In a statement, Mr ANTHONY says separated parents sharing care of children should note
any changes in the amount of care they provide and inform the Family Assistance Office
if they claim FTB fortnightly.
A spokesman for Mr ANTHONY says that the government is not accusing people of rorting the system.
